Pussy no more Riot

The case of Pussy Riot girls is stirring up, even outside Russia. On Monday in Moscow court the members of the punk band apologised all of those Russians, who felt hurt after their provocative performance. In February earlier this year 22 year-old Nadia Tolokonnikowa, 29 year-old Jakieterina Samucewicz and 24 year-old Maria Alochina set up speakers in the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow and sang anti-Putin song. They were immediately moved out of the church. If not the video published on the Internet, the case would probably not end in court.

The video provoked a great scandal and huge disgust in media. Pussy Riot was accused of "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred" and the girls may face a fine of one million rubles - about 20 thousand pounds. Since the process has the hallmarks of a political settlement, Russian independent media say that the team can be exemplarily punished for insulting Putin. Finally, three provocateurs can even go to jail for 7 years!

It is worth noting that the process takes place at the same Chamowniczeskim District Court, which gave long-term conviction of former oligarch Mikhail Khodorkovsky. This symbolism gives a lot to think about.

As it turned out how severe are the consequences of Pussy Riot's performance, the case became notorious. In their defense stood, among others, Sting and Red Hot Chili Peppers, as well as several representatives of the church, who defended "intelligent punk and provocation." Unfortunately, this did not improve the situation of Nadia, Jakieterina and Maria. According to political scientists, the process will be used by the Russian authorities to divert attention from other issues, such as the upcoming elections for governors.

Masha Alekhina: “I am accused of quasi-violent actions. But violence is used against me. I have been in jail since March 3rd; during this period law-enforcement officials, including operatives who handle cases of extremism, have come four times to talk with me. They threatened me mentioning my child, which, I think, is fully inadmissible. One person persuaded me to reject the services of my lawyer. He spoke with me accusingly: said, you are heirs of [Soviet] dissidents.”
