no.w.here summer school: Forcible Frames

SAVE THE DATES:

SUMMER SCHOOL STARTS: 24th JUNE

FULL CURRICULUM DETAILS GO ONLINE: 14th FEBRUARY

Following from last year’s A Lecture from Behind the Screen, no.w.here
announces
NO.W.HERE SUMMER SCHOOL 2013: Forcible
 Frames.

no.w.here’s Summer School returns in 2013 with an
eight-week theory and practice programme for experimental filmmakers,
artists and art students. Building on the success of A
Lecture from Behind the Screen, this intensive, full-time course combines theory seminars led by no.w.here co-founder Brad Butler, alongside
collective workshops and hands-on filmmaking in the in-house analogue film
lab and the local digital media lab at Space Studios. Processes will
include participant-led collective activities, one-on-one tutorials, field
trips, workshops led by artists, activists and filmmakers, ‘theory walks’, forum theatre and other alternative learning formats that enable a
discursive pedagogical framework. In addition Brad Butler’s seminars will
focus on the edge of the documentary genre, seeking to get inside the
power hierarchies of the film apparatus, its forcible frames and its
 imaginative possibilities.

Why a summer school?

While the Summer School is a platform for critical learning, it is also a
community-building time, during which togetherness, collective thinking and
making, and informal events create social bonds that are instrumental for
the artistic process. The no.w.here Summer School is not interested in
reproducing the structures, canons and learning models on offer in Higher
Education; equally we are not an autonomous free school. Though no.w.here
cannot operate outside the virulent marketisation of education, it is our
intention to create a pedagogical environment that grounds itself on
 egalitarian, non-profit terms.

What will the summer school cost?

This 8 week course is £1,000, and the places are limited to 20 people.

Who are the invited practitioners?

The full list of invited practitioners will launch on our website in mid-February along with the summer curriculum to follow shortly after.

Will the Summer School include making work?

As well as theory, looking at films, and workshops led by artists,
activists and filmmakers, the Summer School involves hands on filmmaking
 supported by I-Dailies and Fuji.

Does no.w.here offer an alternative to the Summer School?

While the Summer School is unique in its intensity, no.w.here also runs
courses throughout the year and we remain committed to our basic ethos,
that our lab and facilities can be accessed by anyone for £120 a year.
